Adapt-a-what?

Have you heard of adaptogens? If not you are in for a treat!

Adaptogenic herbs are becoming more and more famous for their ability to restore harmony to various hormones and systems in the body, most notably the adrenals. You can think of them as your stress thermostat, when they sense stress coming up they may act as a chill pill and you help you deal with that, or if you are just getting too run down and slow, they can raise the heat up!

Cool stuff hmm?

Examples of adaptogens are:
  • Rhodiola

  • Ashwagandha

  • Ginseng

  • Gotu Kola

  • Licorice Root

  • Eleutherococcus

  • Reishi Mushroom

  • Cordyceps

  • Maca

Adaptogenic herbs support your body in what it does naturally, so if are doing all the things adding them to you your life can truly upgrade your process. Spoil alert: they won’t help if you run yourself into the ground.

If you’re skipping sleep, over exercising, hating your job, your partner and pulling all nighters just know that these herbs will only take you so far.

Adaptogens help your body modulate healthy function but you need to consistently take them for a few months to notice their effect.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Food sources:

FourSigmatic Adaptogen Blend. I add this to my bulletproof coffee every morning.

Maca Powder. I add this to my breakfast smoothies regularly.

Life Cykel Mushroom extracts or powders. I am currently obsessed with them!

Supplements:

I confess, I have this one on my bedtime table... Whenever I know I have to deal with stressors out of my control I reach out for a higher power! I really feel that it helps regulate the HPA Axis, or your hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis, in short your stress response!

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) for example is a revered nervine tonic, an herb that nourishes, soothes, & relaxes the nervous system having been used for thousands of years within the traditional Indian medicine.⁣

It is also known as “Indian ginseng” & is one of the most important herbs within Ayurvedic medical system.⁣

It is a famous aphrodisiac, improving sexual and reproductive function and has historically been used in preparations to increase sperm count.⁣

However, ashwagandha is most renowned as an herbal adaptogen or anti-stress agent, enhancing the body’s nonspecific response or resilience to stress via its anti-stress agents like sitoindosides and acyl steryl glucosides.⁣

It is also immunomodulatory, improving the body’s defense against disease by augmenting cell-mediated immunity.⁣

It further is a potent anti-inflammatory, protecting against damage to biomolecules secondary to oxidative stress.⁣

It possesses anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, likely due to its ability to reduce central (brain) inflammation.⁣

In animal studies, it even exerts anabolic effects & reduces levels of cortisol (stress hormone).⁣

I am all in!
